About the club

Started in 1952, the Edinburgh Academy Reels Club brought together staff, parents and friends from the Academy for social evenings. It continues today, supported by the Academy, meeting to dance familiar and new reels, strathspeys and jigs.
We meet weekly from September until May in the Edinburgh Academy Junior School Hall.

our weekly programme

The club meets for 30 weeks of the year, from September until December and then January until May. We now meet in the Junior Schoool Hall, Arboretum Road at 8:00pm every Tuesday. Visit our events page for details of the classes for the current term.

Couples pay £5.00 per week, which covers the cost of equipment, music, gratuities for the staff at the school, and it is also used to subsidise the cost of some of our events. Additional costs for COVID cleaning are also covered by this payment.
There is a break during dancing, when juice is served for those who wish it.

End of term dances

The autumn term finishes in early December with a dance to live music and snacks, when we reprise new dances and remind ourselves of old favourites.

The spring terms ends with a dance, with a band and a "self catered" dinner.

summer dances

We meet more casually in the summer, including at Whighams Wine Bar in Charlotte Square who host an evening of socialising, eating and dancing.

Social events / charity works

Socially, we get together for evenings, summer afternoons and for dances at other venues. Members become real friends, with new relationships and old friendships renewed.

Any surplus funds which we make from events are contributed to local charities.

History

In 1952 school teachers started a dance club for pupils and teachers, meeting weekly in the school. From 1955 it was run by mathematics teacher Stewart Fowlie and parents of pupils were also invited. Stewart continued this club until 2007, when he was injured in a domestic accident, damaging his sight. Following Stewart's injury, Alan and Diane Dickson volunteered to keep it going temporarily.

However, 14+ years later Diane and Alan are still running the club. Sadly, Stewart Fowlie passed away in late 2019. However, the club continues, now more than 65 years old.

Who We Are

Every week, between 30 and 50 dancers meet in the Edinburgh Academy to enjoy an evening of reels, jigs and strathspeys, dancing old favourites and new dances.
We walk through all of the dances until everyone is confident enough to dance, helped by others in their set and the wider class.

What We Do

Beginners are very welcome to join us, and if there is enough demand, we hold beginners classes at 7:00pm each week, where we cover the basic steps and a walk through of the dances for later in the evening. These classes continue until the new (or returning) dancers are confident of their abilty.

Why Choose Us

Classes are casual, friendly and sometimes gently intimidating. All of our dancers remember being beginners and they love to meet and help new couples to enjoy the evening as much as they do.

Events

We hold weekly classes between September and May, with both familiar and new scottish country dances, regular dances, tuition for beginners and help if you are attending an event with new dances.
Our dates for 2021 - 2022 are Tuesdays from 5th October until 7th December 8:00pm until 9:30pm, with 7th December an earlier start at 7:00pm, then Tuesdays from 11th January 2022 until 3rd May 2022 8:00pm until 9:30pm and Saturday 7th May 2022 for the Junior School Hall.

We enjoy end of term dances and outings.

About Us

Diane and Alan Dickson instruct the class, assisted by other class members when needed. The dances are chosen to help keep the classes fresh and interesting.
